 Also, the `padic` algorithm seems to have some pathological cases:

 5 loops, best of 3: 219 ms per loop
 sage: timeit('M.det(algorithm="ntl")')
 625 loops, best of 3: 789 ns per loop
 sage: timeit('M.det(algorithm="pari")')
 625 loops, best of 3: 777 ns per loop
 }}}
 That's 5 orders of magnitude slower!
