 Question for Jeroen: how would you deal with such problems? and even more
 with the one with the alarm set to 1 second getting triggered when one
 tries to launch the notebook? would setting the default timeoutsvelue to
 None and then setting then to something sensible in the function code
 depending on uname seem ok?
