That's not entirely true, at least not with GCC. The `inline` keyword is
just one of the things that GCC considers to decide whether or not to
inline a function. Very simple functions like `signed_id()` might very
will be always inlined at higher optimization levels, while complicated
functions might never be inlined (even if marked `inline`).
