utf8x.sty does not seem to be included in TeX Live 2012. (I just tried to
compile a file using `\includepackage{utf8x}`, and it failed.) That seems
like a good reason to get rid of it. You're suggesting instead

\usepackage{ucs}
\usepackage[utf8x]{inputenc}
}}}
maybe?
