I don't think we'll ever bootstrap sage without a half-way working C++
compiler. As you said, gcc is now written in C++. At least the
compilerwrapper doesn't need any optimizations, so even moderately broken
compilers should be fine.
Apparently Cygwin inherits the DLL hell from Windows. Not sure what we can
do about it except building our own cygwin base distro.
