 Why make it more complicated than that?

 Well, temporarily renaming isn't much harder (you only have to make sure
 the previous state gets restored in case installation fails, and, less
 important, to delete the old installation in case of success).

 Deleting the old installation before building the new version has
 succeeded is ... -- bad.
