The doctest failures go away if I disable threading, so perhaps this
breaks because I'm building on an quad-core i7. Unless sombody objects,
I'd say we disable threading on 32-bit intel base/fast targets. This
should probably be done independent of this issue because the "generic"
library shouldn't have multithreaded thresholds being derived from the
latest CPUs with lots of cores.
