 I've done something to the branch which I don't fully understand myself.
 Sorry. But I think the docstrings are better now, even if it's best to use
 diff to compare them with what they were. I haven't done Franco's
 suggestions, but I agree with them! (Except I wouldn't call the
 representation-theoretical definition a definition, as it doesn't cover
 all cases.)
