Hey David,
It's definitely the right choice to go for correctness over speed first.
I'll look into speeding this up in the next few days, if you don't beat me
to it. As the simplest possible attempt, though, couldn't we just drop
your new code in where the `RuntimeError` is raised? Obviously this isn't
the classiest fix, but it wouldn't be bad as a first approximation.
