Comment:

 I decided to remove both the `UniqueRepresentation code` and the pickling
 methods.  The code is much clearer now.  It was surprisingly easy to get
 everything (mainly comparison of elements) to work again; one just has to
 be careful in the case where two parents are equal but not identical.

 (The branch is based on `u/vdelecroix/14990`.)
