Comment:

 I solved the problems with wrong sizes / trailing zeroes. I added all
 tests that used to fail with previous versions as doc tests. All tests are
 passing now. Hence: Needs review again. Tomorrow, I'll provide new
 timings, as the new sanity checks may result in a small slow-down. We will
 see...
