So far I'm tracing through the four commits. It looks OK, but I'd prefer
if this could be rewritten so that there's only one commit to study; it's
not a very difficult change to make, as there isn't very much code. So,
I'm changing the status to `Needs work.` If someone else wants to referee
this ticket & disagrees, I'm not wedded to it, but if I can't see the
entire set of changes, I'm reluctant to say, "it's OK." & this has been
done to me once or twice before, so I don't feel I'm asking anything
unusual :-)
