Since I have rebased this ticket around the Python 2.6.2 changes, and
since the Python 2.6.2 upgrade has uncovered some problems, I'm flagging
this as needs work until some resolution regarding Python 2.6 is reached.
At that point, I'll post a flat patch which will be appropriate, whichever
way we end up going.
