Okay, thanks for the explanations. To me, everything looks fantastic with
this package. Thanks again for contributing this to sage. It's really high
quality stuff IMHO.
The only issue is the license. I think the meataxe license needs to be
looked into. I think there are some former meataxe people at or near
Aachen aren't there? I expect it would not be a problem to change it from
GPLv2 to GPLv2+ but of course you need to ask.
Regarding the license of the database, in the US, I think it is not
copyrightable. (I am not a lawyer and this is only my opinion but see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feist_Publications_v._Rural_Telephone_Service
if you are interested in details.) Because of this, I would recommend the
creative commons CC0 license http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/,
which I think has the same effect under US and German law (which I think
is completely different than US law in this instance since I think German
databases are copyrightable).
You could also just choose the GFDL for it and not worry about the US law.
