 I, on the other hand, am very interested in this because updating
 matplotlib is a pre-requisite for updating numpy to 1.9.x (MPL 1.3.x won't
 build with numpy 1.9.x).

 So if we cannot use matplotlib tri.Triangulation could we try scipy's
 delaunay instead?
