 Thanks for the thorough comments--Nicholas, Anne and I have been working
 on this ticket persistently for just the last week at Sage Days 64, and we
 didn't have the time to polish every facet yet.  I'll do my best to answer
 your questions about the algorithm and some of the design choices.
