Cursory [http://docs.python.org/library/profile.html profiling] with
#6187's "testreference" target indicates that the rewritten `autodoc`
extension is significantly slower than before. I think `autodoc` now also
uses far more memory. Attempting to build the full reference manual on my
machine, Sphinx "stalled" at 97% of modules read. I think the kernel was
too busy swapping everything but Sphinx to disk.
Perhaps there's a more efficient, parallelizable representation. Can we
subclass and/or Cythonize
