Darij put some effort into making sure that `ncsf` and `qsym` worked over
the integers in obvious ways. I believe that this involved a lot of
workarounds.
I am concerned about the conflicts with macdonald.py. I want to check
those out carefully because we are in the process of fine tuning that code
in #18194
IMO: I think that if you want to allow factor coefficients then the answer
to your question is 3) you shouldn't expect anything...
