I'm continuing work on this at days64.25. bb5c9f3 was included since I
needed the fix to get Sage to compile on my machine.
The general outline of this change is clearer in the most recent commit.
The overall abstraction and design decisions (file names, division of
labor between Parents and Elements, etc.) could probably use a second
opinion at this point.
