 I won't claim to be an gitexpert, but I guess a "merge" is better than a
 "rebase" when other people are involved. The commit at which the two
 branches merge then tells you exactly what went on.

 In this case the two involve disjoint set of files so it should be
 straight forward. So I am surprised this does not work.

 Your branch (merged into the 6.8.beta1) compiles fine for me. I will try
 on it own later. Where does your compilation get a problem ?
