Comment:

 Please take a look at this.  the code is (I hope) simpler to understand,
 deals with factors of each degree separately, and has more explanatory
 comments.  I experimented with a couple of other version of mult(), one of
 which is there but commented out, but they were no faster.  I also added a
 new example as discussed above.
