Hi Chao,
I have reduced the amount of time spent on is_cosimple() as well, see
ticket #18605. Together with the patch for components() this leaves
minor() as the main bottleneck. Not so sure if I can make that one much
more efficient.
Looking at the effect of my patches on various types of matroids I ran
into a bug. Try this:

sage: M=Matroid(graphs.RandomRegular(3,200))
sage: M.is_3connected_beta()
}}}
It's random, but nearly always results in a error.
