I agree it would be good to have. Alas I don't have the manpower to work
on this.
I would go for Jean Michel's version indeed. I believe the main stopgap is
to make this compile reasonably robustly. The compilation error in
comment:16 on Ubuntu is a missing dependency: since gap3 is 32bit it needs
to be compiled with the 32bits C library headers. See
