Thanks for your help, Jason. Unfortunately, I get the following error:
$ hg qimport http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/raw-
attachment/ticket/5448/trac-5448-matplotlib-axes-gridlines.patch
hg: unknown command 'qimport'
Maybe there is something wrong with my installation of sage? I'm on OSX
10.4.
The hg revert --all took me a few steps further using hg_sage.patch from
within sage, until:
patching file sage/plot/matrix_plot.py
Hunk #1 FAILED at 155
1 out of 1 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file
sage/plot/matrix_plot.py.rej
patching file sage/plot/plot.py

Not sure if this is the right place for this kind of support. Should I
