The work Vincent has done here is really amazing (because it's such a deep
change, and a lot of the changes are really boring!). It'll be a difficult
ticket to keep up to date and I think we're close to getting it into
shippable form. Also, in the long run the change here is really
beneficial. So, I'd hope we can treat it as a blocker so that we can get
this in. Technically I don't think this *has* to be a blocker.
I did try to help with a little further progress here.
