Since this ticket has a high likelihood to expose bugs/undocumented
behaviour elsewhere (see the subtle doctest problem in comment:70, for
instance) I think it would be unwise to merge it just prior to a release.
I think this is high-priority work, but ideally we'd merge it early in a
beta, so that at least it receives ample testing. Given where we are in
the release cycle for 6.9, that's incompatible with this ticket being a
blocker. I do hope we can find a way to not let this linger and rot,
though.
(if someone disagrees, go ahead and set it back to blocker)
