this method is called with no arguments, i.e. returns the cardinality.
More precisely, it should say that the value `None` for arguments
`map_function` and `reduce_function` is replaced by what?
I didn't document this one because I'm was not sure It was a sensible
default. If you think it is then let's go for it.
