 To be fair, what really made it longer is the docstrings and doctests,
 which is not a bad thing either. Also, it would have made it easier in
 terms of long-term maintenance (you only have to make changes in one
 place).

 I've seen things like as in comment:26 (although not in so compact of
 state), and IMO that is a good way to add a reference that you don't
 specifically cite in the docstring.
