 IMHO not having a pc file for a shared library is a bug in an of itself.
 We are just reinventing the wheel if we try to write our own shared
 library configuration system. Pkgconfig a proven tool, just use it. E.g.
 look how elegantly xorg and Gnome handle >~100 shared libraries whereas we
 are to the hilt in a shit creek with just a handful.
