While the absence of compilation output is annoying it may be due to a
weakness of `pkgconfig` which can change the order of the libraries.
Library order is important if your `ld` has `--as-needed` by default. We
could try to pass `--no-as-needed` but it would be better if the order
could be fixed from `pkgconfig`.
