 Sorry, I seem to have dragged this ticket somewhat off topic. I created
 the new ticket #20309 to discuss Frobenius matrices.

 The original topic of this ticket was point counting (and by extension
 zeta functions), and for that by far the easiest solution would be to use
 PARI's {{{hyperellcharpoly}}}. Better would be to intelligently combine
 this with Harvey's code for Frobenius matrices when it applies (it's very
 fast but not as general), but maybe that can be a separate ticket later.
