I realized, as I was writing that last comment, that I was doing more work
than necessary, because I was re-building smres each time it was needed,
instead of keeping it updated. I re-wrote the code to avoid that. I also
moved the conditional if weights(e)==weights(f) to the outside of the for-
loop, so that it wasn't asked each time. I think that this also improves
code readability, but I'm not entirely sure about that.
