OK, that's a nice algorithm! That said, I don't really understand the way
you implemented it; the concrete meaning of `smres` is unclear to me (some
loop invariants might be helpful).
The two methods are really supposed to do the same thing, just in
different ways? Are the ways really functionally different, i.e. one is a
lot faster in some situations and the other in others?
I'd also be indebted if you could do the fixes I suggested in my previous
post. I don't trust myself that much with cpdefs...
