@pbruin I can confirm the speedup mentioned in
http://trac.sagemath.org/ticket/20693#comment:14. For example, I tried

%time N=Newforms(DirichletGroup(23).gen()^2,4, names='a')
}}}
which now (with #20749 applied) runs 34.5s on my machine and 50.4s with
sage 7.1.
However, 27.9s out of those 34.5s are now spent in the (new)
{{{_nf_nfzk}}}, which still seems a lot.
However, my old examples still crash, but differently (see
http://trac.sagemath.org/ticket/20693#comment:15)
