Wow, I feel silly. But not too silly either--bash's behavior here is
really quite silly IMO. But very nice.
I actually didn't use `-d''` anywhere else--at least in the current
version of this patch the `-d` flag is not used at all. But I'll still
update the patch once more time to use this, since it will simplify things
''slightly''.
