Thanks for the explanation about the period ("{{{\.}}}"). I see that you
are preventing two periods in a row.
Your changes look good. I applied the most recent patch and it passes
doctests. Somehow I feel like a reviewer now, although I filed this
ticket, so I think we need someone else to review it!
