I have just applied your last patch, and I confirm that it gets rid of the
nasty doctest failure.
I'd like to test this on some more machines to see if all is well. And it
will most likely have to be rebased, since it touches so many files. For
now I'll keep using 4.3.1, on which it applies fine.
