 You are right, timing should be taken into account, and this is something
 my patch doesn't provide. Without the patch:

 sage: R.<x> = ZZ[[]]
 sage: timeit('a=1/(1+x)')
 625 loops, best of 3: 1.08 ms per loop
 }}}
 With the patch
 {{{
 sage: R.<x> = ZZ[[]]
 sage: timeit('a=1/(1+x)')
 125 loops, best of 3: 6 ms per loop
 }}}
 So, it is slower by more than a factor five.
