Yep, I came to the same conclusion on the plane today, and even have
virtually the same patch on my laptop now.
Unfortunately, this is only part of the problem. When you move the Sage
directory, the SAGE_LOCAL/lib/pkgconfig/ files are not updated, so
everything breaks again. I have another patch which rewrites
SAGE_ROOT/local/bin/sage-location to fix this problem and lots of other
portability issues with that file. I'll post that to another ticket.
