Just another note - with respect to #9221 - mpl itself actually even shows
this thing, if you look carefully at
[http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/plot_directive/mpl_examples/pylab_examples/spine_placement_demo_01.hires.png
this] picture from one of the latest updates.
