 I've not applied any patch. Could it be the patch was applied by mistake
 in the 4.5.3.alpha0 source code?

 Would it be worth while trying to install the 4MRI package before
 rebuilding the library? If so, will the libraries just be overwritten with
 new ones, or will there be old ones left which cause a problem?

 It's odd why this problem is only seen on 64-bit Solaris!
