Could you test compiling the vanilla matplotlib 1.0 source on solaris to
see if the issue is in the vanilla upstream package?
Just download from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/matplotlib-1.0/matplotlib-1.0.0.tar.gz/download
Then untar and do:
{{{
cd matplotlib
python setup.py build
python setup.py install
}}}
(or use {{{sage -python}}} if you want to install into a Sage version of
python).
