Some timing. With the old version:

[0, 1, 2]
sage: timeit('random_matrix(QQ, 200).pivots()')
5 loops, best of 3: 85.1 ms per loop
}}}
With the new version:
{{{
sage: random_matrix(QQ, 3).pivots()
(0, 1, 2)
sage: timeit('random_matrix(QQ, 200).pivots()')
5 loops, best of 3: 85.7 ms per loop
