Okay, that turned out to be a red herring. At least I think so. Sorry
for the noise.
Relevant tests pass. I don't have time to make a reviewer patch now, but
would appreciate the feedback on whether it's okay to add that check and
format. Since it would be after the real work is done, I think that is
ok.
