you are probably right about {{{except AttributeError}}}. How about
{{{
cdef inline cparent get_cparent(parent) except? 0:
try:
return <unsigned long>(parent.modulus())
except AttributeError:
return 0
}}}
This will also catch the case `parent == None`.
