 I am not convinced that the problem is with ecl at all. I would try
 installing another lisp (unfortunately as far as I can see there are no
 lisps at all in the SuSE linux 11.SP1 DVDs) and compile maxima against
 that. If it still fail that would point towards maxima rather than ecl. If
 it builds that would point to ecl. clisp or sbcl would be appropriate.
 Unfortunately I don't have access to sagemath or boxen so I cannot login
 into silius right now.
