Johan, please install
[http://sage.math.washington.edu/home/leif/Sage/spkgs/matplotlib-1.0.1.p0-debug.spkg
this spkg] (which provides some debugging output, not trying to fix
anything yet), and inspect the top of the install log (only up to ''"[Edit
setup.cfg to suppress the above messages]"'' if it fails, which I expect
it to).
