> Deleting the symbolic link `libpng.dylib -> libpng12.dylib` can also
cause trouble, namely if `pkg-config` '''is''' installed on Darwin, we
still have a broken / messed-up `libpng12.pc` file (containing
`SAGE_ROOT=${SAGE_ROOT}`), and there's '''no''' system-wide `libpng.dylib`
installed. [[BR]]

The problem on his MacOS X machine is actually caused by something else,
namely the way matplotlib tries to detect whether `pkg-config` is
installed, and a broken `pkg-config`, exiting with a non-zero status when
called with `--help`.
A preliminary matplotlib-1.0.1.p1 spkg working around this (and adding a
couple of tests and diagnostic messages) can be found
[http://sage.math.washington.edu/home/leif/Sage/spkgs/matplotlib-1.0.1.p1.spkg
