Ok, it's not `-std=c99` (which would be strange anyway), but I now realize
that even

$ (unset LIBRARY_PATH; gcc -o foo foo.c)

doesn't work, because

... -lgcc --as-needed -lgcc_s --no-as-needed -lc -lgcc --as-needed -lgcc_s
--no-as-needed ...
}}}
is '''always''' added by that GCC. (At least earlier versions were IMHO
smarter w.r.t. this.)
