Now I have an idea: the default option for the configure option `--enable-
unicode` changed from "no" to "yes", and that may be the issue, as alluded
to [http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.lisp.ecl.general/8098 here]. I'm
switching it back to see if that helps. If the current build works and
passes tests on sage.math, I'll post a new spkg and patch file.
